Performance Opportunities at JNDS
JNDS provides many opportunties for both teen and adult dancers to perform in public settings, including our biannual Repertory Concerts. These professionally produced evenings of jazz, hip hop and theatre dance are held in the Tsai Performance Center, a beautiful theatre at Boston University (685 Commonwealth Ave., Boston). The winter show "Not the Nutcracker" is held in early December, and features an off-beat holiday theme. The spring show is in late May. The format of both shows is a collection of short (5-10 minute) dance pieces in a variety of styles, with one intermission. Often, professional dancers from the JNDS faculty, or other local dance companies, will make special appearances as well.
To participate in a single piece in the rep show, dancers commit to a 10-week schedule of rehearsals and classes with the choreographer. Dancers must attend 8 out of 10 rehearsals, plus 8 out of 10 technique classes with the choreographer (from the regular class schedule). In addition, near the show dates, there are mandatory lighting, blocking, and dress rehearsals. Dancers may participate in more than one piece if they desire and have the time to commit to it.
There is no formal audition required to participate; anyone may sign up for any piece. However, we recommend that you have taken the choreographer’s class at least a few times beforehand, to be familiar with the style and confident about the level of technique required. If you’re not sure, ask the choreographer whether he or she thinks you’re ready for a particular piece.
Performing in a JNDS rep show is a very intense, rewarding experience — a way to focus your study of dance, make friends, and have fun while working hard!
